Tie-Dye Cake
Serves: 12
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients
For the Cake:
Favorite white cake mix OR
2 boxed white cake mixes
Food gels: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet)
For the Buttercream Icing:
4 sticks softened unsalted butter
4–6 c powdered sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
Optional: 4 tsp lemon extract
For the Pink Glaze:
1 c powdered sugar
1 tbsp water (add more, a tsp at a time, until desire consistency is reached)
4 drops of pink food gel
How to Make
Mix cake according to direction on the box.
Divide cake batter evenly between 6 bowls. Add 1 food gel color to each bowl and dye to your desired intensity.
Be sure to spray the cake pans, put parchment paper on the bottom of each pan, and spray parchment paper. This ensures that the cake doesn’t stick at all!
Plop ¼ cup of red batter into both pans. Then plop ¼ c of orange right on top of the red batter. Follow with yellow, green, blue, and purple. Then repeat this until all the batter is used.
Take a large skewer, and poke it in the middle of the batter. Pull the skewer from the middle and straight to the edge of the pan. Do this in a wagon wheel spoke pattern all around the cake. Do this in both pans.
Bake according to box. Add all ingredients for the icing into the bowl of a mixer. Mix on high for 10 minutes.
Allow cakes to cool in pans on cooling rack for 15 minutes. Then flip cakes over onto the cooling rack until they are completely cool.
While cakes cook, make icing.
Add all ingredients for the icing into a mixer bowl. Beat for 10 minutes.
Frost the cake, adding icing between the layers, and then on the top and sides. Place in refrigerator for 10 minutes.
If desired, make the glaze and pour glaze over top of the cake. Let cool. Slice and eat!
